What Is Pub Golf?
Pub golf is a pub crawl drinking game based on the rules of real golf. Each pub on your route is a "hole", and each drink has a "par" - the target number of sips it should take you to finish it. Play 9 holes (pubs) for a standard round, or go full 18 for a serious night out. The player with the lowest score at the end wins. Simple, competitive, and absolutely brilliant.
Pub Golf Rules
Every good round needs rules. Here's how pub golf works:
- Par: Decided before the round starts. It's the target number of sips to finish your drink at each hole. A pint might be par 4, a shot par 1, a cocktail par 6.
- Your score: The actual number of sips it takes you to finish. Write it on the scorecard.
- Under par: Finished in fewer sips than par. You're a natural.
- Over par: Took more sips than par. Time for a forfeit.
- Hole in one: Finished your drink in one go. Legendary. No forfeit ever applies.
- You must finish your drink before leaving the pub. No carry-overs. No exceptions.
- Lowest score wins: Add up your score across all holes at the end. The winner gets bragging rights (and probably buys the last round).
How to Score Pub Golf
Scoring is the same as real golf - under par is good, over par is bad. Here's a quick reference:
- -2 (Eagle): Two under par. Absolute scenes.
- -1 (Birdie): One under par. Respectable.
- 0 (Par): Bang on target. Solid.
- +1 (Bogey): One over par. Minor forfeit.
- +2 (Double Bogey): Two over. Bigger forfeit.
- +3 or more: You might want to reconsider your life choices.
Pub Golf Challenges & Forfeits
Forfeits are what separate a good pub golf night from a great one. Here are some of the best pub golf challenges to use when someone goes over par:
- Down a shot of the scorer's choice
- Swap drinks with the person to your left for the next hole
- Speak in a golf commentary voice for the next pub
- Add a stroke penalty for every item of clothing not meeting the dress code
- The biggest over-par player at each hole buys a round of chasers
- Anyone who DNFs (doesn't finish their drink) gets a 3-stroke penalty
- Last place at the halfway point wears a forfeit accessory (traffic cone hat, inflatable flamingo, etc.) for the rest of the round
You can pre-agree your forfeits before the round and write them on the scorecard, or let the group vote at each hole. Either way, keep it fun and make sure everyone's comfortable.
Pub Golf Ideas: How to Plan the Perfect Round
A great pub golf night doesn't just happen - a bit of planning goes a long way. Here's how to set it up properly:
- Pick your course: Choose 9 (or 18) pubs in a walkable route. Variety is key - mix pubs, bars, and maybe a club at the end.
- Set the pars in advance: Assign a par to each hole based on the drink you'll order there. Pints = par 3 to 5, shots = par 1, cocktails = par 4 to 6.
- Assign a scorer: Someone sober-ish enough to keep track. Or just trust everyone to mark their own card honestly (ha).
- Sort the dress code: Pub golf outfits are half the fun. See below.
- Print your scorecards: One per player. Download ours above.
- Start at Social Sticks: Kick your round off at our Bromsgrove venue for hole 1 on our golf simulator, cocktails at the bar, and the perfect warm-up before hitting the town.
What to Wear for Pub Golf
Dress code is a non-negotiable part of pub golf. The more committed the outfit, the better the night. Classic pub golf outfits include:
- Polo shirts (ideally clashing patterns or garish colours)
- Chinos or golf trousers (plaid or tartan are peak pub golf)
- Visors, flat caps or bucket hats
- Golf gloves worn all night
- Novelty accessories: inflatable clubs, plastic trophies, "World's Best Golfer" sashes
Bonus points for matching team outfits, ironed-on numbers, or a hand-drawn scoreboard on the back of someone's shirt. Judges (i.e. the rest of the group) can award or deduct strokes for outfit effort.
Pub Golf Scorecard Tips
To get the most out of your scorecard:
- Fill in the pub names and drinks before you head out so there's no debate on the night
- Assign a "marshal" for each hole who's responsible for verifying scores
- Keep a running total so everyone knows where they stand going into the back nine
- Take a photo of completed scorecards at the end - they have a habit of disappearing
How Many Holes Should a Pub Golf Course Be?
Nine holes is the standard for most pub golf nights - it's enough to have a proper competition without anyone falling over before the final hole. If you're feeling ambitious (or have a large group to keep together), 18 holes works well for afternoon-into-evening events. Just make sure the route is walkable and the pubs aren't too spread out.
